Kapolda Suwondo Orders Evaluation of Weapons Use Training

DIY – The Kapolda Regional of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Inspector General Pol Suwondo Nainggolan ordered his staff to evaluate training in the use of weapons following the incident of First Brigadier MK, a member of the Girisubo Police who were allegedly negligent in using firearms (senpi) to kill civilians.

It is said, the young police officers have actually had time to practice using guns. They are also equipped with knowledge about several types of weapons, including the procedures for using them.

“Actually, the (weapon) training is routine. We will see from the schedule that there is routine training, there is a schedule for functional training,” said the Kapolda Suwondo, Friday, (19/5).

He also said that even though the National Police officers had completed their police education, they still received time to practice weapons use.

“So even though they have finished their education, they are still practicing, both at Polda and where they live,” he said.

Kapolda Suwondo emphasized that the evaluation order he issued was regarding training points that needed to be given to non-commissioned officers.

“This means, if we practice, we will definitely evaluate first where the training point is, which one we want to choose for training,” he added.

As previously reported, the Ditreskrimum Polda DIY revealed the complete chronology of a young man named Aldi Aprianto, a resident of Wuni Hamlet, Nglindur Village, Girisubo, Gunungkidul Regency who was hit by a bullet belonging to Briptu MK, a member of the Girisubo Police.

The Director of General Criminal Investigation (Direskrimum) Polda DIY, Kombes Pol Nuredy Irwansyah Putra said, on Sunday, (14/5) at around 23.00 WIB, the suspect and his friends guarded the dangdut music orchestra in order to clean up Wuni Hamlet, Girisubo, which in when the event was almost over. Suddenly there was an uproar among the spectators.

The suspect First Brigadier MK then went on stage with the aim of mediating or breaking up the commotion.

At that time, the suspect from the stage asked for a firearm held by his partner with the aim of securing it. This is because the colleague carrying the weapon was still junior to the suspect, First Brigadier MK.

“The weapon was then given to the suspect,” said Nuredy Irwansyah during a press conference at the DIY Police Headquarters, Monday, (15/5).

At that time, fellow police officers warned the suspect that the weapons were loaded with ammunition.

“The suspect nodded his head as a sign that he understood that the weapon was loaded and then the weapon was slung by the suspect with the barrel facing down but no checking was carried out and the weapon was not locked,” Nuredy explained.

When the suspect was about to break up the commotion, the suspect slightly bowed to reprimand one of the spectators.

“The firearm accidentally erupted and hit the victim, causing the victim to die,” said Nuredy.

Currently, there are five witnesses who have been examined, all of whom are members of the Polri.

Polda DIY investigators are also scheduled to examine witnesses from civilians who witnessed the incident.

The victim died, based on the post-mortem issued by the hospital doctor, it was stated that the victim had a gunshot wound to the upper back or nape of the neck from the right shoulder and penetrated to the chest between the ribs.

For this negligence, the First Brigadier MK is threatened with being charged with Article 359 of the Criminal Code Law on negligence resulting in death.
