Journalists and Media Staff Killed in Gaza Conflict, Central PWI Issues Position Statement

Jakarta – The Central Board of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) expressed deep concern and sorrow regarding the worsening conflict situation in Gaza along with the increasing number of journalists and media staff who were killed.

Based on a report from the Committee to Protect Journalists as of November 3 2023, at least 36 journalists and media workers have been killed since Israel’s attack on Gaza.

The deaths of journalists and media workers who were tasked with reporting on the massacre of civilians by Israeli soldiers is a humanitarian tragedy that cannot be accepted by common sense because it is contrary to the principles and spirit of universal humanism.

Journalists and media workers are actually one of the entities that must be protected as stated in International Humanitarian law – journalists who work in areas of armed conflict are considered civilians and must be protected from military attacks in conflict areas.

The Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI), the oldest and largest journalist professional organization in Indonesia, asks the parties involved in the fighting in Gaza to exercise restraint and protect journalists who cover the conflict in Gaza because they have a noble duty to convey the truth.

The Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) also asked media leaders and journalists tasked with covering the armed conflict in Gaza to make thorough preparations and consider steps to minimize risks so that there are no more casualties among journalists and media staff.

Furthermore, the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) also expressed its deep condolences and empathy for the families of journalists and media staff who were victims of the tragedy in Gaza. May Allah SWT give strength to the victim’s family to face this ordeal. Bembo
